Energy Costs Halved by Switching from Oil to Wood

The November 14th edition of the Irish Farmers Journal (IFJ) reported on an Irish Bioenergy Association (IrBEA) event which was held several weeks previously. In the article IFJs Donal Magner praised biomass as an alternative to oil and gave the example of Wexford Tomatoes who switched from oil to biomass 7 years ago, when they installed a 2MW wood chip boiler. Matt Wallace, owner of Wexford Tomatoes, explained how the annual fuel saving of about €350,000 led to a payback of less than 2 years. He highlighted the wood chip supply chain as being a key consideration. Clearpowers Tom Sheehy spoke at the event, when the 30 strong group stopped off at the Clearpower wood fuel depot at Clonroche for a walking tour. The large reserve of logs at Clonroche permits long term partnerships with businesses. The tour group also visited several wood chip boiler installations to learn the finer detail of successful integration of biomass heating systems.
